About Willem Van Aelst
Few seventeenth-century Dutch painters handled silk, velvet, and the cold sheen of a dead pheasant's plumage with quite the same precision. Born in Delft in 1627 and trained under his uncle Evert van Aelst, he spent formative years in France and at the Medici court in Florence before settling in Amsterdam, where he refined the asymmetrical, diagonally staged still life that would influence Rachel Ruysch and Jan van Huysum. His hunting trophies and vanitas bouquets reward close looking: a fly on a petal, a watch chain catching light. For collectors drawn to quiet drama and technical command, his work still sets the standard.
