About Pierre Auguste Renoir
Few painters built a career on pure pleasure the way he did. A founding figure of French Impressionism alongside Monet and Sisley, he broke from the movement's strict landscape orthodoxy to chase what really moved him: flesh, fabric, dappled light on a cheek, the social warmth of a Parisian afternoon. By the 1880s he had drifted back toward the classical draftsmanship of Ingres and Raphael, producing the softer, more sculptural figures of his later years despite the rheumatoid arthritis that eventually forced him to paint with brushes strapped to his hand. His canvases still read as an argument for beauty without apology.
