About Edouard Vuillard

A founding member of Les Nabis, the small group of Symbolist-leaning painters who broke from the Impressionists in the late 1880s, he built a quietly radical career out of domestic interiors. Working primarily in Paris from the 1890s onward, he flattened pattern against pattern - wallpaper, dresses, upholstery - until figures and rooms dissolved into a single decorative surface. Critics call this approach Intimism, and he shared it with his close friend Pierre Bonnard. His paintings reward slow looking. A woman sewing, a mother at breakfast, a vase of flowers - ordinary scenes built from extraordinarily considered color, still strange and modern a century on.
