About George Stubbs

Few painters have studied their subject as obsessively as this eighteenth-century Englishman studied the horse. Working in the 1750s, he spent eighteen months in a Lincolnshire farmhouse dissecting carcasses suspended from the ceiling, eventually publishing The Anatomy of the Horse in 1766. That scientific rigor underpins every sinew and shifting muscle in the equestrian portraits he produced for the racing aristocracy, culminating in the life-sized Whistlejacket around 1762. His work sits at an unusual junction of Enlightenment science and sporting portraiture, and it still rewards close looking. The horses feel alive on the canvas, which is why collectors who care about draughtsmanship keep returning to him.
