About John Webber
Few artists got to draw the edges of the known world from a ship's deck, but that was the working life of the Swiss-English painter who sailed as official artist on Captain Cook's third Pacific voyage between 1776 and 1780. Trained in Bern and Paris before being recruited by the Admiralty at just twenty-five, he produced the visual record that shaped how Europe imagined Hawaii, Tahiti, and the Pacific Northwest coast. His portraits of Cook and William Bligh remain the definitive likenesses. For the modern viewer, his drawings carry the rare charge of first contact rendered by a careful, classically trained hand.
